Former Blues winger Demarai Gray turns 28 today, reflecting on an eventful two years at Goodison Park before his departure last summer.
In the modern era, successful transfers have been rare for Everton. However, the summer of 2021 appeared to be an exception. Following Carlo Ancelotti’s departure and Rafael Benitez’s controversial appointment as manager, it was clear that the pre-season would be challenging for the Blues. Years of heavy spending led to the expectation that new signings wouldn’t be costly.
Early signings reflected this expectation. Andros Townsend arrived on a free transfer from Newcastle United, followed by Demarai Gray for just £1.7 million.
Gray’s low transfer fee drew attention. Once a promising talent at Leicester City, Gray had often impressed against Everton. His move to Bayer Leverkusen in 2020 was expected to elevate his career, but after just 10 league appearances, he returned to the Premier League with Everton.
Gray excelled in the season’s early weeks, scoring crucial goals against Leeds United, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Burnley, helping Everton start strong under Benitez. Even as Benitez’s tenure faltered, Gray frequently provided a spark, notably scoring in the Merseyside derby and securing a dramatic stoppage-time winner against Arsenal.
However, Benitez was eventually replaced by Frank Lampard in January. While Lampard managed to steer Everton clear of relegation, he struggled to utilize Gray effectively. Gray’s most significant contribution under Lampard was assisting Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s dramatic winner against Crystal Palace in 2022.
With Sean Dyche’s arrival, Gray’s role became more sporadic. Despite Everton’s lack of attacking options, Dyche preferred the industrious Alex Iwobi and Dwight McNeil over Gray’s flashes of creativity. Gray even played as a centre-forward when Everton secured their Premier League status on the final day against Bournemouth.
In the summer of 2023, Gray had an opportunity to leave when Saudi club Al-Ettifaq expressed interest. The move was fraught with tension, as Dyche initially suggested Gray would stay, prompting Gray to express his frustrations on social media. Dyche responded, revealing that Gray had communicated his desire to move.
Ultimately, the transfer benefitted Everton. Reports indicate they received around £8 million for Gray, allowing Dyche to bring in Jack Harrison on loan, who aligned better with his coaching style. Gray has since scored four goals in 23 Saudi Pro League appearances, leaving Evertonians content with his departure.
While not a masterstroke, Gray’s transfer was a smart piece of business during a tumultuous period for the club.
