Marc Guehi will miss England’s next Euro 2024 match if they advance to the quarter-finals.
England began their 2024 European Championships knockout stage with a match against Slovakia on Sunday afternoon at the Veltins-Arena.
If the Three Lions win, they will face Switzerland, who eliminated reigning champions Italy with a commanding 2-0 victory on Saturday night.
The 23-year-old centre-back received a yellow card in the 68th minute of England’s final group game against Slovenia, which ended in a 0-0 draw.
According to tournament rules, a player is suspended for one game if they receive two yellow cards. A second suspension occurs if a player accumulates four yellow cards.
Despite having only 14 senior England caps, Guehi has been vital for Gareth Southgate, playing every minute of the tournament so far.
Guehi wasn’t the only English player to receive an early booking in the match against Slovakia.
Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo was shown a yellow card in the seventh minute of his first Euro 2024 appearance for a late challenge.
Ten minutes later, Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham received a yellow card for bringing down Slovakian winger Lukas Haraslin.
The quick succession of yellow cards marks the earliest instance since 1980 that three different players were booked at the Euros.
