Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon quickly showed his support for Elliot Anderson after Anderson’s transfer to Nottingham Forest was confirmed.
On Sunday, Newcastle completed two player sales to meet profit and sustainability regulations (PSR). Yankuba Minteh was sold to Brighton after his successful loan spell at Feyenoord, and Anderson moved to Nottingham Forest.
Anderson, 21, who joined Newcastle at the age of eight, has been a significant part of the club, making 55 appearances. He took to social media to share his thoughts on leaving, posting an emotional video highlighting his journey with Newcastle. He wrote: “Representing my club for 14 years has been a dream come true. Wearing the black and white shirt at St James’ Park is something I will always cherish.
“I want to thank everyone at the club and all the Geordies who supported me throughout my journey. I will always support the club and wish everyone the best. As one door closes, another opens. Thank you, NUFC.”
The £35m fee for Anderson matches Newcastle’s record sale, a title he now shares with Andy Carroll, who moved to Liverpool in January 2011. Liverpool became part of Newcastle’s recent PSR dealings, learning they could acquire Newcastle’s winger Gordon if they were willing to trade their centre-back Jarell Quansah.
Liverpool values Gordon highly, but they were not prepared to lose Quansah, who impressed last season and is now key to their first team. Gordon, who was on the bench during England’s 2-1 extra-time victory over Slovakia at Euro 2024 on Sunday, responded to Anderson’s post with, “Gunna miss you lad.”
Anderson expressed his excitement about joining Forest on the club’s official website, stating: “I’m buzzing. It’s a massive club with a big history, and I can’t wait to get started.”
He added, “I love the club and the city. I’ve always been fond of Nottingham Forest, and I think it’s a great place to showcase my abilities and advance my career.”
