West Ham United and Chelsea are set to compete for the signing of Wesley Gassova this summer.
Chelsea joining the race poses a challenge for West Ham, and a recent development has further complicated the situation.
West Ham first targeted Gassova in May, reportedly making a £15.4 million bid and positioning themselves as frontrunners. Despite Julen Lopetegui signing another Brazilian teenager, Luis Guilherme, he still seeks a talented left winger.
Earlier this summer, Tim Steidten scouted in Brazil, identifying Gassova as a standout talent, which is unsurprising given his exceptional natural ability.
However, Chelsea’s entry into the race complicates West Ham’s pursuit of the Brazilian youngster.
Adding another layer to the situation, several Ligue 1 clubs, including Nice, have also shown interest in Gassova. The Corinthians player is reportedly open to a move to France.
This is not encouraging news for West Ham or Chelsea.
Football analyst Ben Mattinson once described Wesley as “ridiculously explosive.” Losing out on Gassova to Chelsea or Nice would be a significant setback for West Ham.
The 19-year-old right-footed left winger is known for his explosive pace and impeccable technical ability. His tendency to cut inside from the flank is exactly what West Ham needs at the London Stadium.
However, Chelsea’s involvement presents a significant challenge for West Ham, and Ligue 1 clubs will also influence where the Corinthians winger ends up.
