FC Union Berlin has expressed interest in Brenden Aaronson with Leeds United, but a permanent transfer this summer seems unlikely.
According to Berliner Kurier, Leeds would need to significantly lower their demands for a deal to happen. Currently, few clubs are lining up to sign Aaronson, who managed just two goals and two assists in 38 games on loan at the German club last season.
Despite this, Union Berlin remains keen on the American and registered their interest in a permanent move at the end of last season. They believe a deal is possible as Leeds needs fresh funds after missing out on Premier League promotion. Aaronson has also expressed a desire to leave Elland Road for a permanent move to revive his career. He felt comfortable at Union Berlin and performed better in the latter half of the campaign.
The main issue is that Leeds wants to recoup much of the €33m they paid for Aaronson in 2022, and the American’s high salary is beyond what Union Berlin can match. Managing director Horst Heldt has emphasized that the club will not break its wage structure for signings.
A move for Aaronson would require Union Berlin to secure a significant sale and Leeds to be flexible with their demands. Additionally, Aaronson would need to lower his salary expectations.
While Aaronson is valued by the club and wants to leave Leeds, several factors must align before Union Berlin can consider bringing him back.
