Liverpool are preparing a second bid for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon this summer, according to senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track Podcast.
Liverpool’s initial attempt to sign Gordon was rejected, with Newcastle also seeking to include Jarell Quansah in the deal. The Reds dismissed that idea, and now a straight-cash offer is being considered. However, Newcastle is demanding a “huge fee” for Gordon.
Gordon was mentioned as a potential sale to help Newcastle address profit and sustainability issues before June 30, but the club and manager Eddie Howe were determined to retain him.
Although Gordon remains a target for Liverpool, Howe wants to keep him and is planning for the new season with him in mind. Newcastle has set a minimum price of £70 million for Gordon, which sources suggest might be too steep for Liverpool.
As a result, Liverpool may need to explore alternative options to strengthen their attacking lineup. Additionally, Gordon’s willingness to move, once he returns from international duty, could pose another challenge for Newcastle.
One reason Liverpool is pursuing another winger is that new boss Arne Slot plans to use Cody Gakpo as a full-time center forward starting next season.
