### Why Tottenham Hotspur Should Consider the Gamble of Signing Federico Chiesa for €25m
Recently, it was revealed that Juventus are willing to let 26-year-old Italian international Federico Chiesa leave for €25m this summer. Chiesa, who has caught the attention of Tottenham, is not in new coach Thiago Motta’s plans.
According to CalcioMercato, Tottenham are interested in the Euro 2020 star and have outpaced Newcastle United in the race for Chiesa, though negotiations have not been finalized.
Chiesa, a left-winger who can also play on the right, was highly regarded in Serie A, especially after his standout performances in Euro 2020. Before suffering an ACL injury, Chiesa was described by teammate Giorgio Chiellini as ‘unstoppable.’ However, the injury sidelined him for almost an entire season and seemingly affected his confidence.
Juventus, whose current deal with Chiesa expires in June 2025, have decided to sell him for around €25m, including add-ons. This decision comes as he is not part of Thiago Motta’s plans.
Since his return from injury, Chiesa has struggled to recapture his former form. Although he occasionally shows flashes of his old brilliance, these moments have become rare.
Given his contract situation and reduced price, Juventus are ready to part ways with Chiesa. With his deal set to expire in less than a year, the club is willing to accept a low fee for a player with significant potential.
Is it worth the risk for Tottenham?
Signing Chiesa would undoubtedly be a gamble for any club. The Italian winger is not the player he once was, and there is no guarantee he will return to his peak form. However, his talent remains, and he could thrive under a manager who can restore his confidence and form. Ange Postecoglou might be the right person to unlock Chiesa’s potential.
Tottenham would need to invest €25m for Chiesa, but the benefits could be substantial. At 26, he is still young and has not yet reached his prime. He brings a wealth of experience and is adept on both wings, offering skills that Spurs currently lack. When in form, he contributes consistently with goals and assists.
With Son Heung-min now 32 and his performance slightly declining, Tottenham must plan for the future. Chiesa, if he can regain his pre-injury form, could be a long-term replacement for the South Korean star. Although this is a significant ‘if,’ the low asking price makes it a risk worth considering.
It remains to be seen if Daniel Levy and the Tottenham management will share this view and make a move for Chiesa.
