Marc Guehi has shared his plans for his winner’s medal if England triumphs over Spain in Sunday’s Euro 2024 final.
A significant topic of discussion ahead of Euro 2024 was England’s center-back options. With Harry Maguire missing out on the final 26-man squad due to injury, some suggested Lewis Dunk as a natural replacement for the Group C opener against Serbia.
However, Gareth Southgate chose to trust Marc Guehi, a decision that has paid off. The Crystal Palace defender has been one of England’s standout performers this summer.
“He’s a young defender that we’ve had enormous belief in,” Southgate said after their 2-1 victory over Slovakia. “He’s justified that with his performances in this tournament.”
Although Guehi missed the quarter-final match against Switzerland, he returned for England’s dramatic 2-1 victory over the Netherlands, where a late goal by Ollie Watkins secured their place in the final.
The 24-year-old defender is now expected to start against Spain in a back-three alongside Manchester City’s Kyle Walker and John Stones.
Ahead of Sunday’s game in Berlin, Guehi revealed that he plans to give away his winner’s medal if they win. When asked about the medal, he said: “I’ll give it to mum and dad, they’ll take care of it. It’s more the memories. The physical stuff, they’re going to go but it’s more the memories you can pass and share. That’s the most important thing, to be honest.”
Guehi had previously given his parents the gold medal he received for defeating Spain at the under-17 World Cup. Reflecting on that 2017 victory, he said: “We were playing against a really good team in Spain. They have players who played then who are still playing now which is amazing for them.”
