HERE WE GO: Jamie Carragher reveals what ‘must’ happen with Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold ahead of the 2026 World Cup

Jamie Carragher has expressed his views on what needs to happen with Trent Alexander-Arnold ahead of the 2026 World Cup, despite ongoing debates about the Liverpool star’s role.

England is still reeling from their heartbreaking loss in the Euro 2024 final, with Spain proving too strong for Gareth Southgate’s team in Berlin. Reflecting on the tournament, it’s evident that the Three Lions seldom played like a team capable of dominating, unlike Spain, who have a history of defining tournaments. England’s standout moment was their first-half performance against the Netherlands in the semi-final.

From the tournament’s outset, it was apparent that England needed to improve to win it all, leading to a midfield change with Trent Alexander-Arnold being replaced by Kobbie Mainoo.

Jamie Carragher believes Trent Alexander-Arnold should start for England
Playing in central midfield seemed to suit Alexander-Arnold, as he had Kyle Walker behind him for defensive support, allowing the Liverpool player to influence the game more. Unfortunately, this strategy didn’t succeed. However, in an interview with The Telegraph, Jamie Carragher emphasized the importance of the 25-year-old for the next World Cup.

“With Kyle Walker aging, England must start trusting Trent Alexander-Arnold as a right-back so he becomes a mainstay for the next two years,” Carragher said. “He is too good not to be in the starting XI. People keep questioning his defensive abilities, but Walker was responsible for at least three goals in this tournament.”

Uncertain future for Alexander-Arnold at club and country
Alexander-Arnold had one of his best seasons with Liverpool last year, excelling in a hybrid role that highlighted his strengths. However, his future is uncertain with Arne Slot replacing Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

Additionally, it’s unclear who will lead England into the next World Cup, adding to the uncertainty about Alexander-Arnold’s role in the coming years. What is certain is that he remains a potential game-changer if his ideal position is identified.
