A couple of Tottenham Hotspur players are celebrating as champions again after Argentina secured a 1-0 victory over Colombia to win Copa America.
Many Tottenham fans are likely still feeling the sting of England’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. Although Spurs had no players in the England squad, many supporters were rooting for the Three Lions. However, it wasn’t meant to be, as Mikel Oyarzabal’s late goal secured the European Championship for Spain.
Just hours later, the Copa America final concluded with Argentina battling Colombia in Miami. Lionel Messi went off with a nasty ankle injury before substitute Lautaro Martinez secured the win for Argentina in extra time.
This victory adds to Argentina’s recent successes, including the Copa America in 2021 and the World Cup in 2022, marking an incredible period of dominance as Messi’s international career nears its end.
**Giovani Lo Celso on Argentina’s Win**
Argentina’s dominance has been impressive, with some players who haven’t shone at club level excelling for the national team. Tottenham’s Giovani Lo Celso exemplifies this.
Lo Celso, signed in 2019 with a strong reputation from Real Betis, hasn’t replicated his Betis form at Tottenham, scoring 11 goals in 108 games compared to 16 goals in 45 games for Betis. After 18 months on loan at Villarreal and a limited role under Ange Postecoglou, Lo Celso might be on the move this summer.
Despite this, the 28-year-old has been a key player for Argentina this summer and during the Lionel Scaloni era. Lo Celso came off the bench to help Argentina win Copa America and celebrated on Instagram with the caption “BiCampeones de América,” celebrating back-to-back Copa America titles.
Tottenham teammates Bryan Gil, Micky van de Ven, and Pedro Porro showed their support in the comments. James Maddison also congratulated Lo Celso, commenting “amazing brother,” despite missing out on the England squad and watching the Three Lions lose to Spain.
Lo Celso will now have a break before returning to pre-season training with Tottenham, but it remains uncertain whether he will stay with Spurs by the end of the summer.
