"EXCLUSIVE"- Newcastle have identified their ‘No.1 target’ if Eddie Howe leaves for the England job, according to a report.

Newcastle United will pursue Mauricio Pochettino if Eddie Howe decides to take the England job, according to The Mirror.

Senior reporter John Richardson indicates that PIF seeks clarity on Howe’s future, recognizing the short timeframe to appoint a replacement before the new season begins.

Hopefully, it won’t come to that, and Howe will receive the assurances he needs following Amanda Staveley’s departure and the appointments of Paul Mitchell and James Bunce. However, if Howe leaves, Pochettino is expected to be the club’s top target.

Mitchell, our new sporting director, gave the Argentinian his first job in England during their time together at Southampton and had a ‘good working relationship’ with him at Tottenham.

Pochettino is currently available, but The Mirror reports that the former Chelsea manager has interest from other clubs, meaning Newcastle ‘would have to move quickly’ if Howe departs for the England job.

Given Pochettino’s Premier League experience, close ties with Mitchell, and the fact that he was a target for PIF during the 2020 takeover attempt, targeting him would make a lot of sense. However, I hope it doesn’t come to that.
