Tottenham are set to kickstart their summer transfer plans, with Daniel Levy securing a deal to bring a European Championship winner to the club and Ange Postecoglou identifying the striker he wants for the upcoming season.
Under the leadership of the Australian manager, Spurs have made significant progress, finishing fifth in his first season. Postecoglou’s high-octane football and straightforward media style have earned him many admirers. While securing Europa League football for next season is a positive step, Tottenham aims for a top-four finish and possibly even title contention.
Postecoglou is focused on winning trophies, a feat Spurs haven’t achieved in 16 years. To realize his vision, Tottenham plans to make three new signings this summer: a midfielder, a prolific forward, and another wing option. Additionally, if funds permit, Postecoglou wants a left-sided defender to back up Destiny Udogie at left-back.
Reports from Italy suggest that the first signing, Federico Chiesa, could be finalized this week. With a new manager at Juventus, Chiesa’s tenure in Turin seems to be ending as his contract expires next summer. Roma and Chelsea were interested, but Tottenham has emerged as the frontrunner. A deal worth €25m (£21.1m), potentially rising to €30m (£25.3m) with add-ons, is reportedly close, and Daniel Levy has already agreed to personal terms with Chiesa’s representatives, offering €6m a year over four years, roughly £97,000 a week.
Chiesa is currently on extended leave after Euro 2024 but is expected to return to training soon, with Juventus looking to finalize his future swiftly.
In addition, Tottenham is prioritizing the signing of Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke this summer. Postecoglou needs a reliable center forward, as he relied on Son Heung-min and Richarlison last season. While Son excelled as captain, his best position is as an inverted left-sided forward. Richarlison is not seen as a long-term replacement for Harry Kane, making a new prolific striker essential.
Tottenham has been linked with Jonathan David, Ivan Toney, and Santiago Gimenez, but Postecoglou has decided to pursue Solanke. The 26-year-old scored 19 goals in 38 games last season, helping Bournemouth achieve their highest-ever finish of 12th. Only Erling Haaland (27), Cole Palmer (22), and Alexander Isak (21) outscored Solanke in the Premier League last season.
