Tottenham Hotspur’s Spanish players, Bryan Gil and Sergio Reguilon, have not joined the club on their tours to Japan and South Korea.
According to Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, the club has granted both players permission to stay behind to explore potential transfer opportunities.
Reguilon arrived from Real Madrid in the summer of 2020 with high expectations. Although he started strong, his form declined midway through his first season, and he never fully recovered. Over the past two seasons, Reguilon has been on loan, first to Atletico Madrid in 2022-23, and then spending six months each at Manchester United and Brentford.
Paul O’Keefe reports that Girona is currently in talks to sign Gil.
Gil was signed from Sevilla in the summer of 2021 for just over £20 million plus Erik Lamela. Two years later, Gil assisted Lamela in a crucial match against Juventus, helping Sevilla reach the Europa League final.
Gil played nine Premier League games in his first six months, starting none and then going on loan to Valencia in January 2022. The following season was similar, with Gil playing four league games, starting twice, before another loan to Sevilla. Last season, he managed 11 games with only two starts. Gil’s inconsistent playing time at Spurs, amid managerial changes and shifting tactics, suggests a move back to La Liga is beneficial for both him and Reguilon.
