Virgil van Dijk has always praised his goalkeeper, Alisson, and recently highlighted their “special” relationship both on and off the pitch. Van Dijk addressed rumors about Alisson’s potential move to Saudi Arabia this summer, making it clear that he values his teammate highly.

The two have had a successful career together since joining Liverpool in 2018, winning every major trophy except the Europa League last season, and establishing one of the strongest defensive units in Premier League history.

This summer, there have been speculations about the futures of both Van Dijk and Alisson, with the latter being linked to a move to Saudi Arabia. Reports suggest that Al Nassr, a Saudi Pro League side, has made Alisson their top target, despite also agreeing personal terms with Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson.

However, Liverpool has no intention of letting Alisson go. In an interview with Amazon Prime Video, as quoted on Liverpool’s official website, Van Dijk expressed his admiration for Alisson: “My relationship with him since he joined the club has been special. We’ve played many games together, won everything together, and he is an incredible goalkeeper and human being. He is, in my eyes, the best goalie in the world.”

Despite the uncertainty surrounding some players’ futures following Jurgen Klopp’s departure at the end of last season, Alisson remains highly valued by the club. He is contracted to Liverpool until the summer of 2026 and has made over 260 appearances, achieving 100 clean sheets—a feat only seven players in the club’s history have accomplished. His outstanding performances have also secured him the No. 1 spot for Brazil, ahead of Ederson.

Van Dijk spoke about the security Alisson provides as the last line of defense: “It’s nice. I want him to not have anything to do! That’s my personal feeling. But obviously, we play at the highest level, against good teams and strikers, and there could be moments when he has to do his job. And I’m very, very happy that he’s very good at this job as well. Him, me, and the rest of our defenders, we live and dream of clean sheets, and that’s what we aim for.”

Alisson has yet to join Liverpool’s pre-season preparations under new manager Arne Slot, following his participation in the 2024 Copa America with Brazil. It is hoped that any uncertainties about his future will be resolved once he returns.
