Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness has disclosed that Leeds United is considering a “£40-50 million” upgrade to Elland Road. Speaking on the Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness, who now runs a football consultancy, mentioned that the club is looking at either a significant renovation or potentially a new stadium once they are established in the Premier League.
Leeds recently announced that Elland Road is back under club ownership after being sold in 2004 due to financial difficulties. In recent years, with investment from 49ers Enterprises, the club has been exploring options to improve the historic stadium, which was built in 1897 and last cosmetically upgraded in 2017. Currently, Elland Road can hold 37,792 spectators.
Wyness emphasized that the stadium is “past its sell-by date and needs some work.” He stated on the podcast, “The architects likely provided the club with a range of options. They could spend £100 million on renovations or even consider building a new stadium. Based on what I’ve heard, they are looking at an initial £40-50 million investment to enhance the current facilities and bring them up to standard.”
He added that once Leeds is firmly established in the Premier League, the club might pursue a more extensive upgrade or even consider a new stadium. Wyness noted the historical significance and advantageous location of Elland Road but stressed the necessity of modernization.
