A new prospect has emerged on Leeds United’s shortlist as the club seeks to make additional signings before the summer transfer window closes. The focus is on an 18-year-old attacker.
So far, Leeds has completed four signings this summer, including the permanent acquisition of Joe Rodon, who was on loan last season. They also brought in Joe Rothwell on loan, Jayden Bogle for £5 million from Sheffield United, and Alex Cairns as the third-choice goalkeeper, replacing Kris Klaesson. The club has primarily been offloading players, with six sold, five on loan, and several others departing at the end of their contracts.
As Leeds returns from a training camp in Germany, they are expected to concentrate on bringing in new players. Reports suggest that Leeds is leading the race to sign Gennadiy Synchuk, an 18-year-old star from Metalist Kharkiv. Synchuk, who recently helped Ukraine’s U19 team reach the semi-finals of the U19 Euro 2024 in Northern Ireland, is also attracting interest from Derby County, Middlesbrough, and Sunderland, as well as some German clubs. However, Leeds has reportedly been monitoring his progress since winter and is ahead in the pursuit of Kharkiv’s No. 9, who has 30 senior club appearances.
When asked about Leeds’ interest, Synchuk stated that he was unaware of it and directed inquiries to his club’s management. His agents advised him to perform well in Northern Ireland, leaving his future uncertain until after the tournament.
Leeds United, returning from their pre-season camp in Germany, are now focused on strengthening their squad. They have already made several signings, including Alex Cairns, Jayden Bogle, Joe Rodon, and Joe Rothwell, but need to fill gaps left by player departures, particularly at full-back and in midfield. The club also seeks a natural No. 10, with Brenden Aaronson often deployed on the left.
Leeds has a track record of identifying young talent across Europe, such as Illan Meslier, Mateo Joseph, Pascal Struijk, and Crysencio Summerville, who were acquired for modest fees and have become key players. The club aims to continue this approach with Synchuk, who could join the U21 side initially.
While other English and German clubs are interested in Synchuk, Leeds appears to be in the strongest position to secure the young Ukrainian’s signature this summer.
