Newcastle United midfielder Joe Willock is eager to revive his effective partnership with Alexander Isak in the upcoming season. The duo combined for Newcastle’s opening goal in their 4-1 win over Urawa Red Diamonds at the Saitama Stadium on Wednesday. Willock also assisted Jacob Murphy before being substituted at half-time.
Murphy scored again, and Lewis Hall added a fourth, continuing Newcastle’s perfect pre-season start.
During the 2022-23 campaign, Willock and Isak formed a successful partnership. However, Willock’s injury issues last season limited his impact on Eddie Howe’s side. Now, the midfielder is excited to work with Isak again this season.
After playing a key role in Isak’s goal against Urawa, Willock told The Gazette: “Everyone knows how great a player he is, and I’m looking forward to playing with him again this season. Hopefully, we can link up and do great things for the team.”
Willock’s forward drive and tendency to drift in from the left often complement Isak’s habit of moving to the left flank and cutting inside. Despite Willock’s absence for much of the season, Isak still managed to score 25 goals for Newcastle last season.
The 24-year-old has started pre-season in excellent form, with three goals in three matches. Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe believes Isak can reach even higher levels this season, following his impressive 2023-24 campaign.
Isak attracted interest from Chelsea, but Newcastle has been firm in their resolve to keep him this summer.
Reflecting on Isak’s performance against Urawa, Howe said: “I thought he was very good. He looked electric and hungry for goals. I believe his game can go up another level. There are always areas for improvement, and we continuously work with him to find new ways to help him score more goals. I’m really pleased with his application today.”
