"One time Mourinho told me that......."- Heung-min Son reveals how Mourinho once upset him during a team talk

### Heung-min Son Upset by Jose Mourinho’s Team Talk

You might assume any manager would cherish having Heung-min Son in their squad and treat him with the utmost respect. However, one particular team talk from Jose Mourinho left the Tottenham star feeling quite upset.

**Sonny Received an Apology from Mourinho**

During Mourinho’s tenure at Spurs from 2019 to 2021, he experienced moments of good football and even led the club to a cup final. Despite this, he was sacked before having a chance to win the Carabao Cup.

Reflecting on that period, Son recalled an incident where Mourinho harshly criticized him at half-time, making an example of the current Spurs captain in front of his teammates.

In an interview with EAFC (via SportBible), Son recounted: “Once, Mourinho told me off during the game. He said, ‘I don’t think you want to play in a game with teams like Burnley or Stoke,’ in front of all the players, and I was very upset by it. I’m not an 18- or 19-year-old to be treated like that.”

After the incident, Mourinho did reach out to Son to clear the air. Son added: “Later, the coach texted me, saying, ‘I know you understand that it wasn’t my intention to target and hurt you. But I need to make sure that other players are not being lazy, and I need to show them by telling off the best player in the team, and for me, that player is you.’ After reading that text, I felt better.”

**Heung-min Son: A Tottenham Legend**

One thing that is unquestionable is Son’s dedication to Tottenham. Over the last decade, he has become a club legend through his goals, creativity, and consistently high-level performances.

The South Korean star has openly expressed his love for the club, even stating that joining Spurs was the best moment of his career (Tatler Asia).

**Spurs Web Opinion**

Mourinho’s explanation of his comment to Son seems more like a reactive excuse than a premeditated strategy to rally the team. Criticizing the best player, especially someone as amiable as Son, is an unusual motivational tactic.
