Eddie Howe is optimistic that Newcastle United will secure “at least one player” before the summer transfer window closes.
The Magpies have already made five signings during this window. Lloyd Kelly and John Ruddy joined on free transfers from AFC Bournemouth and Birmingham City, while Odysseas Vlachodimos arrived from Nottingham Forest in a deal that saw Elliot Anderson move in the opposite direction.
Lewis Hall’s loan from Chelsea was made permanent for an initial £28 million, and United’s most recent signing is Will Osula from Sheffield United for £10 million, with potential add-ons increasing the total to £15 million.
“I think it’s important to stay calm; there’s no point in any other emotion,” Howe said, looking ahead to the final three weeks of the transfer window. “We’ll try to make the right decisions given our current circumstances.
“The window has been a bit slower this year, but it seems to be picking up now, and we’re hopeful of bringing in at least one more player. We’ll see how things unfold.”
Newcastle is still in discussions with Crystal Palace regarding Marc Guehi, despite having two bids rejected. The Eagles value the center-back at around £65 million, a fee that would set a club-record transfer if Newcastle agrees.
Strengthening the right forward position is also a priority, though this may depend on outgoing transfers, as Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) continue to limit Newcastle’s spending capacity.
Howe further explained: “For us, it has to be about quality over quantity because we already have a strong squad. Any new addition needs to elevate the group to new levels, which is challenging to find. There aren’t many players out there who can make us better.”
