Sunderland may once again look to Tottenham’s academy as they continue their search for a striker.
We can exclusively reveal that Sunderland has a strong interest in signing Tottenham striker Dane Scarlett this summer.
Scarlett has been highly regarded at Spurs for a while, though his loan spells in the Football League have yet to deliver the goal-scoring impact expected.
During the 2022/23 season, he showed promise at Portsmouth in League One, although he didn’t score as many goals as he had hoped. His loan to Ipswich last season was cut short after he played just 146 minutes in the Championship. However, he did manage to get some playing time with Spurs in the Premier League during the latter half of the season.
Sunderland is now keen on bringing Scarlett in on loan. While there was early summer interest in his teammate Will Lankshear, it’s understood that Scarlett is now the preferred option due to his experience in senior football.
At just 20 years old, Scarlett would be brought in to complement a more experienced center-forward, rather than as a replacement.
Former Spurs coach Jose Mourinho was full of praise for Scarlett when he was just 17, calling him a huge talent for the future. In 2021, Mourinho told The Times, “I know he’s still very young, just 17, and it is probably too early for the next World Cup, but Tottenham Hotspur have a striker in Dane Scarlett who, if everything goes well, is going to be phenomenal.”
Sunderland has had considerable success in signing former Spurs U-23 players in recent years, with Jack Clarke, Dennis Cirkin, and Romaine Mundle all coming through the youth ranks at the North London club before making their way to Wearside.
