As Spurs continue to rebuild their squad for the upcoming season, they have been clear about which players they no longer see as part of their plans.
Two of these players are fullbacks Emerson Royal and Sergio Reguilón. While Emerson was part of the squad that recently toured Asia, he has now moved on to AC Milan. Reguilón, however, was left out of the squad and instructed to find a new club, though he remains at Spurs for now.
With the transfer window closing soon, both Spurs and Reguilón are running out of time.
Tottenham has confirmed that Bryan Gil and Sergio Reguilón have been given permission to skip the tour in order to explore potential transfer opportunities. Both are expected to leave this summer.
Since being excluded from Spurs’ pre-season squad, the Spanish international has been particular about joining a club that will compete in European football next season. Recently, there have been surprising reports linking the 27-year-old with a move to Barcelona, who currently have only one fit, natural left-back.
A transfer to the Catalan giants would be a blow to José Mourinho, who once praised Reguilón as a player who embodied Real Madrid’s competitive spirit against Barcelona. Mourinho had previously described Reguilón as someone who approached big matches with the right mindset.
Reguilón has also spoken highly of Mourinho, sharing a story from 2020 that highlighted the manager’s thoughtfulness. On Christmas Day, knowing that Reguilón was alone, Mourinho arranged for a cooked suckling pig to be delivered to him, so he wouldn’t have to worry about dinner. Reguilón appreciated the personal attention to detail that Mourinho displayed off the pitch.
However, despite his desire to stay in Mourinho’s good graces, Reguilón may have little choice in the matter. With his £53k-per-week contract set to expire next summer, and Transfermarkt valuing him at €12 million, Tottenham is eager to offload him.
Reguilón wouldn’t want to spend a season on the sidelines, and Spurs are unlikely to let him leave for free next summer. However, given their past decision to loan out Eric Dier and Ivan Perišić, only to lose them for free this summer, there is a precedent that suggests Tottenham might consider loaning Reguilón out, allowing another club to cover his wages for the season if they can’t find a buyer.
