Manchester United’s pursuit of Jarrad Branthwaite may not face much resistance from Everton, who are grappling with ongoing takeover issues.
The Red Devils have been active in this transfer window under the influence of new minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe. They’ve strengthened their squad by signing Joshua Zirkzee for £36.5 million, alongside defensive additions like Leny Yoro for £58 million, and Bayern Munich duo Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui.
Despite these big-money defensive signings, Branthwaite remains a target for United since the window opened. Although there are disagreements over his valuation, with United offering £60 million and Everton asking for £70 million, the English defender remains on their radar.
United manager Erik ten Hag could have a good chance of landing Branthwaite, as Everton’s financial woes have left manager Sean Dyche with little control over the sale of key players during the ongoing takeover uncertainty.
“I’m confident that the club will do their best to keep us competitive,” said Dyche. “But the bigger financial picture is beyond my control. The club needs to balance the finances, and we’ve made strides in that direction, but the overall financial situation depends on what funds are needed at any given time.”
The recent £50 million sale of midfielder Amadou Onana to Aston Villa, a player Everton would have preferred to retain, highlights the club’s financial instability.
If United decide to pursue Branthwaite, he could be the next high-profile departure from Everton. Despite United’s recent signings of Yoro and De Ligt, and the presence of Lisandro Martinez, concerns about injuries and potential departures of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof could make Branthwaite an appealing addition for Ten Hag.
The ongoing struggles of The Friedkin Group and 777 Partners in their attempts to take over Everton, who are set to move into their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock next season, further complicate the situation.
