During pre-season, Postecoglou outlined his plans for Maddison, noting that while the playmaker’s confidence was intact, his fitness had been a limiting factor.
Based on his performance against Leicester, Maddison will be eager to return to the England squad once the FA appoints a long-term successor to Gareth Southgate.
Meanwhile, Maddison was involved in a moment that surprised Gary Neville during Sky Sports’ coverage of the 1-1 draw. Neville was particularly impressed by Pedro Porro’s goal for Spurs, which was assisted by Maddison.
Neville remarked on the risk Porro took to score, noting how Spurs’ full-backs, including Porro and Destiny Udogie, often positioned themselves unusually. At halftime, Neville praised Porro for his bold positioning and excellent finish. He said, “It’s remarkable that a right-back is in that position and finishes so well. Like Maddison, Porro will look to build on his performances from last season, which felt like his true debut season in north London. Tottenham signed Porro for £39 million in the summer of 2023 after he initially joined on loan with an obligation in January. Under Antonio Conte, it didn’t seem like Porro had the opportunity to fully showcase his abilities.
