Newcastle United are nearing a deal with Crystal Palace for Marc Guehi, but it could involve a defensive reshuffle as Kieran Trippier is reportedly seeking a move before the transfer window closes.
Several clubs are monitoring Trippier’s situation. Although Eddie Howe wants to retain the 33-year-old right-back at St James’ Park, Trippier is eager for regular first-team football.
This development follows Trippier’s exclusion from the starting lineup in Newcastle’s opening weekend win over Southampton.
Everton, currently facing an injury crisis and lacking right-back options, have shown interest in Trippier. Sean Dyche, who previously managed Trippier at Burnley, acknowledged the need to reinforce this position.
“He’s one of many names that have come up here,” Dyche said on Thursday. “As if by magic when we haven’t got a right-back! Branthwaite is still a bit away at the moment. Seamus is a bit closer, Garner is a bit closer just coming back into training with the group. Tarky has got a maybe situation—so we’re going to have to look at that.”
Atalanta and Galatasaray have also been linked with Trippier, and there has been talk of interest from Saudi clubs this summer.
Trippier was an unused substitute against Southampton and played 45 minutes for Newcastle’s Under-21s against Sunderland on Monday night. He has also lost the captain’s armband this season, with Bruno Guimaraes being named Newcastle’s new skipper.
While Trippier’s future remains uncertain, Newcastle are growing increasingly confident of securing their top centre-back target, Marc Guehi.
Negotiations between the clubs have continued this week, with Palace indicating that a £65m package, including add-ons, would likely seal the deal for Newcastle.
The England international is reportedly keen on the move, and while Newcastle have explored other options recently, Guehi has always been their top choice. However, the potential record signing of the 24-year-old may prevent Newcastle from also acquiring a right winger.
