In recent weeks, reports from France have highlighted Sunderland’s interest in signing SM Caen’s forward, Alexandre Mendy.
With less than two years remaining on his contract, Mendy is eager to join the Championship side during this transfer window. Last week, Ouest-France reported that the Black Cats are awaiting the 30-year-old’s arrival.
Earlier this week, Mendy’s agent confirmed that his client is determined to make the move to Sunderland.
On July 19th, Mendy openly expressed his desire to transfer to the Stadium of Light. In a new interview with Foot Mercato, the Guinea-Bissau international once again emphasized his wish to join Sunderland.
Following a recent acquisition by Kylian Mbappé’s investment fund, Coalition Capital, which bought a majority stake in the Ligue 2 club, Mendy has been in discussions with the Real Madrid star and Caen’s new management to facilitate his move to Sunderland.
“It’s clear to me and to everyone that I want to go to Sunderland. The new management must honor the commitments made to me by the club. If I’m training today, it’s to be ready for this new challenge with Sunderland,” Mendy stated.
“I’ve said it before, but I’ve already said my goodbyes to D’Ornano, my teammates. Kylian is the boss, so he calls me. The new management must understand that this is about me as a person, and it’s the worst thing.
“I’ve respected the club and the fans, and after four years here, I want to leave on a high note. Caen and the fans will always be in my heart, but my focus is now on Sunderland.”
Mendy made it clear that his heart and mind are set on joining Sunderland. According to Foot Mercato, Régis Le Bris’ side will fight “until the last minute” to secure his services. Both parties are now waiting for Caen to give them the green light.
