Dan James is set to face increased competition for his spot in Leeds United’s starting XI, but he showcased his abilities in the win over Sheffield Wednesday.
James scored Leeds’ second goal in a 2-0 victory at Hillsborough, contributing to Daniel Farke’s side securing their first three points of the season.
Farke has been vocal about needing more attacking options recently, and any new arrivals are likely to challenge James for his position.
Leeds’ £10 million acquisition, Largie Ramazani, is expected to replace Crysencio Summerville and should soon be in the starting lineup.
Ramazani’s arrival is also anticipated to be followed by Tottenham’s Manor Solomon, who is set for a medical at Leeds today ahead of a season-long loan.
Beckford Comments on James’ Development
Once Solomon’s signing is confirmed, Farke will need to decide on his best attacking trio behind Mateo Joseph, especially after James and Brenden Aaronson both scored in the recent match.
Wilfried Gnonto’s performance in a central role also provides Farke with numerous options.
While some might argue that James’ inconsistent finishing could see him dropped once the new signings settle in, Jermaine Beckford disagrees.
Analyzing James’ goal on Sky Sports after the match, Beckford highlighted the forward’s composure in finishing a one-on-one chance as evidence of his growth as a player, an attribute he previously lacked.
Beckford remarked: “People have criticized Dan James for not slowing down in crucial moments before crossing, passing, or shooting. But he did exactly that here, showing he’s learning from Daniel Farke and his teammates, and is evolving into the experienced player Leeds United hoped for.”
Leeds’ Best Front Four After Solomon’s Arrival
Although Solomon’s signing is significant, it is an unusual choice for Leeds, given that he is another right-footed winger who prefers playing on the left.
While his quality suggests he is too good for this level, it remains to be seen if he will fit into Leeds’ best lineup.
With Ramazani brought in to replace Summerville, he will likely be Leeds’ new left-winger. Gnonto should start centrally based on his recent performance at Hillsborough.
This leaves Solomon, Aaronson, and James competing for the right-wing spot, with James currently in the lead for that position.
