Leeds United will not be signing Jonathan Rowe from Norwich City this month, as the player has finalized a move to Marseille, ending a lengthy transfer saga.
Daniel Farke’s efforts to rebuild the Leeds squad have been challenging, hindered by the club’s cautious approach in the transfer market. While there were consistent rumors linking Leeds with potential signings, including Rowe, negotiations have not progressed.
Rowe appeared to be a prime target for Leeds as they reportedly engaged in discussions with Norwich City, according to the Telegraph. Leeds’ initial valuation of £7 million for the winger fell short of Norwich’s asking price. Rowe, who has one year left on his contract with an option for another year, was priced higher by the Canaries.
However, Leeds will not pursue Rowe, as John Percy confirmed that Marseille, managed by Roberto De Zerbi, reached an agreement on Wednesday to sign the player. The deal includes a £14 million fee with an obligation to buy, an initial loan fee, and £3 million in add-ons.
Leeds’ reluctance to make a competitive bid for Rowe becomes clearer with Marseille’s substantial investment. With a total potential cost exceeding £17 million for a player with only one standout season, Leeds may have deemed the risk too high, particularly given Rowe’s injury history. If Leeds’ discussions with Norwich director Ben Knapper revealed this demanding asking price, it’s likely the call was brief.
