John Wenham suggests that Tottenham might be prepared to cover half of Sergio Reguilón’s remaining wages to facilitate his departure from the club.
The owner of the well-known Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose indicates that Reguilón’s salary is deterring potential suitors. Fabrizio Romano (via The United Stand, August 19) mentions that an opportunity for Manchester United to sign Reguilón could emerge, as he is expected to leave Tottenham in the final days of the transfer window.
Wenham, speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, believes Spurs are willing to take significant steps to offload the left-back.
“At this point, Tottenham would probably be content to let him go for free,” Wenham said. “He earns £100,000 per week, isn’t playing, and has a poor attitude. His high wages are discouraging other clubs from making a move. That’s the main issue.”
Wenham speculates that Tottenham might agree to pay half of Reguilón’s wages for the remainder of the year if another club covers the other half, given the current lack of interest.
Reguilón has 44 weeks left on his contract, meaning he is set to earn £4.4 million at his current salary. If Tottenham were to cover half of this, it would amount to over £2 million. Considering the minimal interest in him, this seems like a feasible solution.
With Reguilón unlikely to feature under Ange Postecoglou this season and a new contract off the table, Spurs need to act quickly to offload him before the transfer deadline.
