According to football journalist John Wenham, Tottenham Hotspur is unlikely to pursue a transfer for Monaco right-back Vanderson before the window closes. Wenham cast doubt on the move, suggesting it would only make sense if Pedro Porro were to depart the club.
Wenham questioned the logic behind targeting Vanderson given Tottenham’s current right-back depth. With Porro as the established starter and Djed Spence as a reliable backup, Wenham sees no pressing need for an additional signing in that position.
In an interview with Tottenham News, Wenham remarked:
“If we were considering Vanderson, it raises questions about Djed Spence’s role. Honestly, I don’t see this transfer happening. I’m satisfied with Porro as our main right-back and Spence as the backup. Maybe Vanderson is on a long-term list, and if Porro were to leave, we might then pursue him.”
Vanderson, a 23-year-old known for his versatility as both a right-back and right wing-back, has stood out in Ligue 1. Last season, he made 23 appearances for Monaco, scoring three goals and providing one assist, demonstrating his attacking prowess.
His contract with Monaco extends until June 2027, underscoring his value to the French club. Despite Vanderson’s talent, Tottenham seems comfortable with their current right-back options. Porro has had a strong start to the season, including a goal in Spurs’ opening Premier League match against Leicester City. Meanwhile, Djed Spence, who had a successful loan at Genoa, has been reintegrated into Ange Postecoglou’s squad and has appeared in both league matches this season.
Given the solid performances from Porro and Spence, adding Vanderson does not seem to align with Tottenham’s immediate needs. As the transfer window draws to a close, Spurs appear set to retain their current right-back options.
