Sunderland wrapped up an impressive summer transfer window with several new signings. On deadline day, they were linked with numerous players, focusing primarily on strikers to meet Kristjaan Speakman’s objectives.
Ultimately, Sunderland brought in four new players, including striker Ahmed Abdullahi from Gent. The other additions were midfielders Salis Abdul Samed and Milan Aleksic, and center-back Chris Mepham, who joined on loan from Bournemouth.
Overall, nine new players arrived at the Stadium of Light this summer, providing Regis Le Bris with a well-equipped squad for the 2024/25 Championship season. The new arrivals also include goalkeepers Simon Moore and Blondy Nna Noukeu, midfielders Alan Browne and Ian Poveda, and striker Wilson Isidor on loan from Zenit.
Despite these additions, there remains a notable issue: Sunderland still lack a proven Championship striker. Speakman’s main task this summer was to secure a striker with a track record in the Championship. While Sunderland signed promising strikers Isidor and Abdullahi, neither has Championship experience.
Last summer’s arrivals, who were supposed to be exciting prospects, failed to deliver, highlighting the unpredictability of forwards in the second tier. With Jack Clarke’s move to Ipswich Town, the need for a reliable goal-scorer is even more pressing.
Le Bris will hope that either Eliezer Mayenda, Isidor, or Abdullahi can step up and score around 15 goals this season to fill Clarke’s shoes. However, given their lack of Championship experience, this is a significant challenge. Le Bris might need to rely on contributions from other players, such as Jobe Bellingham, who scored seven goals last season, and Romaine Mundle, who appears ready to step up. Finding a way to get Chris Rigg on the score sheet, despite his missed opportunities this season, will also be crucial.
Only time will tell if Sunderland will regret not signing a proven Championship striker this summer.
