Newcastle United preserved their unbeaten start to the season with a 2-1 victory over Spurs at St James’ Park. Despite only having 33% possession, Newcastle secured all three points with goals from Harvey Barnes and Alexander Isak in each half, leaving their fans satisfied as the team heads into the international break unbeaten.
Tottenham Hotspur, on the other hand, will return to north London pondering missed opportunities. Although they dominated for large stretches of the game, they were unable to capitalize on their chances. Nick Pope made several key saves to keep Spurs at bay, and with key players Dominic Solanke and Richarlison unavailable, they struggled to convert their pressure into goals.
Speaking to Match of the Day, Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou expressed his frustration, saying: “This is really the story of our season so far. We controlled the game for the most part and created enough chances to win comfortably. We were managing their transitions well, but the goal we conceded in the second half was a result of losing focus. We should have secured the game much earlier.”
Postecoglou remained hopeful, stating, “If we continue to play like this, we will eventually get the rewards. It’s a tough place to play, and I thought we managed it well. It’s frustrating to have good performances without the results to show for it.”
Spurs have now lost their last three visits to Tyneside with an aggregate score of 12-2, following a 4-0 defeat last season and a 6-1 loss the year before. Newcastle United now sits three points ahead of Spurs in the Premier League table and will have a fortnight off due to the international break before their trip to Molineux on Sunday, September 15.
