Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has acknowledged that players could still be sold despite the English transfer window closing on Friday.
While English clubs are unable to make new signings until January, the transfer window remains open for one more day in countries such as Saudi Arabia, Portugal, and the Netherlands. Belgium and Turkey have even longer windows.
Newcastle’s summer transfer period was marked by significant frustration. The club had been linked with high-profile targets including Marc Guehi, Federico Chiesa, and Noni Madueke. However, by the close of the window, Newcastle had only signed Lloyd Kelly and William Osula as outfield additions, alongside making Lewis Hall’s loan from Chelsea permanent. They also brought in goalkeepers Oydsseas Vlachodimos and John Ruddy.
Howe has acknowledged that there is still a possibility of player departures. Kieran Trippier, who has been rumored to be leaving Newcastle and has played just 32 minutes of Premier League football this season, is a player Howe wants to keep at St. James’ Park. However, Howe conceded that Jamal Lewis might be among those who could depart for international clubs.
“I absolutely want Kieran here,” Howe said (via talkSPORT). “That hasn’t changed, and it won’t change. I saw the stories through a few messages, but it was news to me.”
He added, “Players like Jamal Lewis, who have been linked with moves, might leave. But we hope no one else will.”
Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie has reported that Lewis is in Brazil to finalize a loan move to Sao Paulo.
Despite the transfer challenges, Newcastle has made a strong start to the season, securing a 2-1 victory over Tottenham and earning seven points from their first three Premier League matches. Their next match is against Wolves after the international break.
