Gilberto Silva has expressed concern for footballers’ safety following an incident involving Everton fans in August.
After Everton’s disappointing 4-0 defeat to Tottenham in their second Premier League match of the season, some supporters were seen verbally abusing Sean Dyche’s team at a train station.
While Neal Maupay faced criticism for his response to the fans, former Arsenal player Silva has voiced worries that such behavior could lead to a dangerous situation. Quoted by the Mirror on September 2, Silva said: “Players don’t train all week with the intention of losing. Mistakes happen, but that doesn’t justify the abuse from frustrated fans. Imagine if these fans faced similar treatment in their own jobs; they might understand that players experience the same feelings.”
Silva emphasized the need for greater care and responsibility, stating, “What if someone gets hurt or worse? Players wouldn’t seek out abusers to retaliate. It’s crucial for players, clubs, federations, and authorities to stand together against such behavior.”
Regarding the aftermath of Everton’s loss to Tottenham, Silva noted that while fans have a right to be frustrated, abusive behavior at train stations or on social media is unacceptable. Such actions do little to help the team, and hopefully, they won’t become a regular occurrence at Goodison Park. The squad’s performance needs to improve after the international break to alleviate mounting pressure.
