Newcastle United’s efforts to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace this summer were unsuccessful. Despite making several bids that could have set a new record for the club, Newcastle couldn’t persuade Palace to sell their standout defender. The 24-year-old, who impressed with England at Euro 2024, was deemed too valuable by Palace chairman Steve Parish, who stated that only “superstar” money would be enough to secure his departure—an amount Newcastle was not prepared to offer.
The transfer window proved frustrating for Eddie Howe’s team, as they only added Will Osula and Lloyd Kelly as senior outfield players, and no new signings were made on deadline day. However, Newcastle is expected to revisit their pursuit of Guehi in January.
With less than two years remaining on his contract, Palace is keen to avoid the risk of Guehi leaving on a free transfer. Football Insider reports that the club plans to open negotiations for a new deal with him.
Guehi has been a key figure for Palace, captaining the side in every Premier League match this season and leading them to a victory over Norwich City in the Carabao Cup. As a central part of Oliver Glasner’s plans, Palace is eager to retain him, especially following the departures of Joachim Andersen and Michael Olise and the ongoing interest in Eberechi Eze.
