Archie Gray is still awaiting his first start for Tottenham Hotspur after transferring from Leeds United to the North London club. Despite his move, Paul Robinson has shared his predictions about the promising young player.
The 18-year-old has seen a rapid rise over the past year. Leeds fans, familiar with Gray’s presence in the first team during Jesse Marsch’s tenure, had anticipated his success. An injury had previously delayed his debut until the start of the 2023-24 season, when Daniel Farke included Gray in Leeds’ starting lineup.
Gray went on to make 52 appearances for Leeds last season, playing various positions including right-back, central midfield, and attacking midfield. His versatility quickly made him a favorite as Leeds reached the play-off final, although they lost to Southampton. Due to the failure to secure promotion and the looming Profit & Sustainability deadline, Leeds had to sell Gray. Spurs acquired him for £40 million.
At Tottenham, Gray has appeared as a substitute in two of the club’s three Premier League matches and is awaiting his first start. Robinson, who also left Leeds for Tottenham as a young player, predicts that Gray will become a regular for England in the near future. Robinson has expressed on social media that Gray and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton will soon be fixtures in the England squad.
Gray initially went to London for a medical with Brentford but chose Tottenham when the opportunity arose. Leeds preferred selling Gray to Tottenham rather than Brentford, partly to facilitate a permanent deal for Joe Rodon and to avoid potential backlash from fans. They believed that a move to a larger club like Tottenham would be more acceptable to supporters than a transfer to Brentford.
