Tottenham’s decision to sign Dominic Solanke this summer has prompted debate, with former striker Troy Deeney suggesting that Brentford’s Ivan Toney might have been a better fit for the team.
On the Seaman Says Podcast, Deeney critiqued Spurs’ transfer choices, arguing that Toney, who recently joined Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli for £40 million, would have been a more valuable addition to Tottenham’s attack.
Deeney highlighted Toney’s consistent goal-scoring ability as a potential asset for Spurs. He compared Toney to Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson and Solanke, suggesting that Toney’s versatility and goal-scoring prowess could have resulted in more goals for Tottenham.
Deeney commented:
“Ivan Toney was available, and he could have been a great fit. I believe he would score more than Nicolas Jackson at Chelsea and more than Solanke at Spurs. Many focus on the mobile, energetic striker, but goal-scoring should be a top priority.”
Despite Solanke’s strong performance last season, with 21 goals in 41 matches, Deeney still sees Toney as the superior choice for Spurs.
Solanke’s transfer to Tottenham came at a notable cost—£55 million plus £10 million in potential bonuses—making him a key figure in manager Ange Postecoglou’s plans.
