Sunderland signed the promising striker Ahmed Abdullahi on deadline day, with Régis Le Bris expressing confidence in the young player’s potential but acknowledging that he will need time to adjust to his system.
The 20-year-old, known for his impressive goalscoring record in youth football, joined from Belgian club Gent in a deal reported to be around three million Euros. Abdullahi will immediately join Sunderland’s senior squad, but Le Bris is prepared for a gradual integration process.
“He’s a big, quick, and strong player,” said Le Bris. “He’s a good finisher and, being just 20, like Eliezer, he will need time to adapt and fit into our team. We understand the pressure on young players, but they need time to develop and learn from their mistakes. Ahmed will definitely need this time.”
Wilson Isidor has been preparing for regular senior football by playing with the U21s, but the number nine shirt is likely to stay with Eliezer Mayenda, who has started the season exceptionally well. Le Bris believes this is a perfect example of the benefits of giving young players consistent opportunities.
Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman commented on Abdullahi’s arrival, noting that while the striker will need time to acclimate, he will provide immediate competition within the squad.
