Liam Bridcutt, who previously played for Sunderland and Leeds United, has taken on a role as a sessional coach at Newcastle United’s academy. Bridcutt, 35, will be working under Jack Ross, the interim manager for the under-21s, following Ben Dawson’s departure in July.
Bridcutt’s career began at Chelsea before he established himself at Brighton & Hove Albion with 151 appearances over four seasons. He joined Sunderland during the 2013-14 season under manager Gus Poyet but struggled to make a significant impact. His subsequent career included stints at Leeds United, Nottingham Forest, Bolton Wanderers, Lincoln City, and a final role at Blackpool with former Imps manager Michael Appleton. He has now transitioned into coaching after retiring from professional play.
In 2021, Bridcutt criticized Sunderland fans, suggesting their negative attitude was harming the club’s performance in League One. He remarked that while fans are important, their criticism of players was detrimental, particularly given the team’s league status and performance.
