Greg Halford has returned to the North East to join Blyth Spartans, marking his return to the region just over 15 years after leaving Sunderland.
Halford initially joined Sunderland in the summer of 2007 under manager Roy Keane, moving from his previous club for £3 million. Although he mainly played as a right-back during his brief stint with the Black Cats, his versatility allowed him to cover several positions in his nine appearances. Following loan spells with Charlton Athletic and Sheffield United, Halford left Sunderland permanently in July 2009, transferring to Wolverhampton Wanderers for around £1.7 million.
Over the next decade, Halford played for various clubs including Nottingham Forest, Brighton & Hove Albion, Cardiff City, and Aberdeen. In recent years, he has transitioned to non-league football, with stints at Billericay Town, Hashtag United, and Bishop’s Stortford. Now, he returns to the North East to join Blyth Spartans as the first signing during David Stockdale’s interim management at Croft Park.
Halford expressed his enthusiasm about the move, stating, “I’m really excited to be here and back up in the North-East, it has been a while. I’m looking forward to working under (David) Stockdale as well, who I’ve known for several years. I’m just really looking forward to it and meeting all of the lads.”
Stockdale, the Spartans’ interim manager, praised Halford as a “good, experienced utility player” who will bring valuable knowledge and help mentor younger players. He added that he was thrilled to have Halford join the team.
Pending Football Association and league approval, Halford could make his debut for Spartans in their match against Prescot Cables on Saturday.
