In recent years, Wolverhampton Wanderers have gained a reputation for successfully recruiting Portuguese talent, many of whom have made a significant impact at Molineux.
Ruben Neves, in particular, won the admiration of the entire fanbase with his crucial role in the club’s promotion from the Championship in the 2017/18 season. Known for his spectacular long-range goals and leadership, Neves transferred to Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal for around £47 million in the summer of 2023, concluding his six-year stint at Wolves.
Yet, Neves was not the only Portuguese player to excel at Molineux. Pedro Neto, who joined Wolves from Lazio for £18 million in the summer of 2019, quickly became a fan favorite with nine goal contributions in his debut season. Despite impressive performances, Neto struggled with injuries, limiting him to 31 league appearances between 2021 and 2023. Nevertheless, he had a standout season last year, contributing 13 goals and assists in just 24 appearances before his £54 million move to Chelsea. Although his departure helped Wolves with a significant profit and compliance with league financial regulations, the club might regret losing such a talented winger.
Another Portuguese talent, Vitinha, could also be a source of regret for Wolves. Vitinha spent the 2020/21 season on loan from Porto, making 22 appearances and scoring once in an FA Cup match against Chorley. Despite his potential, Wolves chose not to sign him permanently, and he returned to Porto before joining Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2022.
In Paris, Vitinha’s performance has surged, as he starred in all 12 Champions League games for PSG last season and recently received a Ballon d’Or nomination. His market value has skyrocketed to €90 million (£75.8 million), significantly more than the fee received for Neto. Wolves might regret not securing Vitinha permanently, as his current value and abilities could have bolstered their midfield and potentially allowed them to retain Neto.
