LATEST TRANSFER UPDATE: Leeds United are on the brink of a SIGNIFICANT signing that could be a game-changer for the team, who’s reminiscent of Jude Bellingham, expected to be a crucial addition this season, given his potential to provide the goals and assists that were lacking from Kamara, Gray, and Gruev last term.
Leeds United’s Ao Tanaka, previously compared to Jude Bellingham during his time with Fortuna Düsseldorf in Germany, could prove to be a valuable addition to Daniel Farke’s squad.
Before Tanaka’s arrival, Leeds’ midfield depth included Ethan Ampadu, Ilia Gruev, Joe Rothwell, and young Charlie Crew. With the departures of Kamara and Archie Gray earlier in the transfer window, adding another midfielder was crucial to enhance squad depth.
Tanaka, however, offers more than just additional depth. Leeds had previously shown interest in him last summer, but the move fell through due to injury. Tanaka’s previous performances, including eight goals in 27 appearances for Japan and a memorable goal against Germany in the World Cup, further showcase his talent. While he may not be the most defensive-minded player, his athleticism, technical skill, and ability to play box-to-box make him a strong fit for Leeds’ midfield alongside Ampadu.
His solid performance in Germany and his versatility should help him adapt well to the Championship. At a reported fee of around €4 million (£3.4 million), Tanaka represents a potentially excellent value transfer for Leeds, adding both creativity and goal-scoring capability to their midfield.
