Leeds United midfielder Brenden Aaronson has faced harsh criticism from US media following his performance in the 2-1 friendly loss to Canada on September 7.
Aaronson, who started the match in Kansas City, received a poor rating of 3/10 from Soccer America. Goal.com was similarly unimpressed, noting: “He didn’t contribute much. While he wasn’t the worst performer compared to some teammates, he failed to make a significant impact.”
NBC Sport also criticized Aaronson, giving him a 4.5/10 rating. They commented: “He was his usual hardworking and aggressive self but was inconsistent with the ball. Fotmob’s stats show he was dispossessed three times, won only 2 of 7 duels, and had just 26 touches. Overall, it was not a sharp performance.”
Aaronson, who returned to Leeds United after a loan at Union Berlin, has shown promise in the Championship this season. However, some fans expressed dissatisfaction, leading to jeers during preseason.
With Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter’s departures, Aaronson is expected to play a more prominent role in the Championship. Daniel Farke will likely rely on him as a natural number ten, a position where he has shown potential.
The international friendly against Canada was an opportunity for Aaronson to demonstrate his abilities to Farke, but he fell short. He will look to redeem himself in the upcoming friendly against New Zealand on September 11 before returning to Leeds.
