Sunderland plans to secure new contracts for key players Dan Neil and Dennis Cirkin in the coming weeks and months, as confirmed by Kristjaan Speakman.
With the transfer window now closed, Speakman and the Sunderland management are shifting focus to contract negotiations. This summer has seen success in retaining young talents, with Dan Ballard, Chris Rigg, and Jobe Bellingham all signing new deals. However, Sunderland allowed Jack Clarke to leave as his contract entered its final two years without a renewal in sight.
The club is in a strong position with few players out of contract next summer. Both Neil and Cirkin’s current deals run until the end of the 2025/26 season. Neil had previously turned down an initial contract offer due to uncertainty surrounding the head coach position, but discussions have continued.
Speakman stated, “Contract negotiations are definitely on our radar. It’s a continuous process, similar to painting the Forth Bridge; it’s always ongoing. We aim to stay proactive in this area.”

Speakman praised the club’s ability to secure commitments from Ballard, Jobe, and Rigg, noting their significant value both on and off the pitch. “Retaining talent is often tougher than acquiring new players,” he added, emphasizing the club’s commitment to maintaining a strong squad.
Patrick Roberts and Luke O’Nien are also set to see their contracts expire in summer 2026, but the club holds an option to extend their deals for an additional year.
