Former Arsenal player Theo Walcott has lavished praise on Raheem Sterling ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur this Sunday.
Sterling, who joined Arsenal on a season-long loan from Chelsea on deadline day, was ineligible for the recent match against Brighton & Hove Albion. However, manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Sterling will be included in the squad for the North London derby.
Walcott has described Sterling’s arrival as a “match made in heaven,” noting that the 29-year-old has joined a cohesive squad that thrives on playing attractive football. The 35-year-old former Arsenal star highlighted Sterling’s versatility, mentioning that he can play effectively in any attacking position and is a proven winner now in an environment where he is appreciated.
On The Football News Show (via BBC Sport), Walcott said: “Raheem Sterling’s signing is a perfect fit because he is now in a stable team that controls the game and enjoys their football. There’s no more uncertainty with changing managers or questions about his playing time. The team has a strong sense of unity.
“Sterling’s flexibility allows him to play in any forward position or even in the number 10 role behind the striker. He’ll relieve some of the pressure on Saka and challenge Trossard and Martinelli for a starting spot. He’s a winner and is now in a place where he feels valued.”
Sterling could be a significant addition for Arsenal. The Gunners, who were keen on signing a winger before the window closed, secured Sterling temporarily without a loan fee and at a cost of about £97,500 per week. This move is seen as a strategic win for sporting director Edu Gaspar.
Arsenal will spend approximately £4.3 million in wages until the end of June for Sterling, with potential substantial benefits if he regains his form and confidence. Despite a mixed season at Chelsea in 2023/24, Sterling was one of their standout performers with 18 goal contributions across all competitions.
If Sterling can replicate his previous impact, he could be a game-changer for Arsenal, similar to Leandro Trossard. The versatile attacker, capable of playing on either wing or as a forward, might make his debut against Tottenham on Sunday.
