Aaron Ramsdale has expressed that he holds no ill feelings toward Mikel Arteta despite his challenging departure from Arsenal this summer.
Ramsdale was a regular starter during his first two seasons at the Emirates, featuring in 78 matches across all competitions during the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons and quickly becoming a fan favorite.
However, his role changed when Raya joined on loan from Brentford last summer, relegating Ramsdale to a backup position. He managed only 11 appearances across all competitions and just six in the Premier League.
With Raya’s loan becoming permanent, Ramsdale’s chances of reclaiming his starting spot diminished. Consequently, the 26-year-old has moved to St. Mary’s after completing a £25m transfer to Southampton (according to BBC Sport).
In an interview with talkSPORT, Ramsdale addressed whether he felt any resentment towards how his Arsenal tenure ended. He responded with a mature perspective.
“No, I’ve been around football long enough to understand that the manager’s decision is final. I did my best to change his mind and get back into the team, but his decision was firm, and David had an excellent season,” Ramsdale said.
“You can be upset about being sidelined, but when someone else performs well, you have to accept it. It was a tough period, but I’ve found a new opportunity and am eager to play again. There’s no hard feelings, and it’s time to move forward.”
Ramsdale also emphasized his ongoing positive relationship with Arteta, noting that they remain in contact.
“I’m grateful for what Arteta did for me during my time at Arsenal, and he has thanked me for my contributions as well,” Ramsdale added.
“As with many managers, decisions are made that might upset some. Arteta made his decision, but we still communicate. I’m looking forward to playing again and will have the chance to face Arsenal in a few weeks, which will be a nice return.”
