Everton’s “horrific” start to the Premier League season has raised concerns, but Jamie Carragher believes Sean Dyche’s position should not be in jeopardy. The Sky Sports pundit spoke during the live commentary on 14 September, as Everton faced their fourth consecutive defeat at Aston Villa after squandering a two-goal lead for the second game in a row.
The Toffees’ 3-2 loss at home to Bournemouth before the international break intensified pressure on Dyche, with reports suggesting the Everton board might consider a managerial change if results don’t improve soon. However, Carragher disagrees with this sentiment.
Carragher stated, “I don’t think there should be any decision made about Sean Dyche at this point. It’s still early in the season, and Dyche has a solid track record, particularly at Burnley and Everton, for keeping teams in the Premier League.”
He added, “Everton need to stay in the Premier League until they move to the new stadium. Whether Dyche stays after that is another matter, but I believe they’ll secure enough points, especially at Goodison Park, to stay in the division.”
Despite the poor start, including conceding more goals in the opening four games than they have since the 1950s, Carragher remains supportive of Dyche. He pointed out that while scoring goals has historically been a challenge, recent games have seen Everton struggle defensively.
Everton’s position at the bottom of the league without any points is concerning, but Carragher argues that a narrow defeat to a strong Champions League side, despite Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s missed chances, isn’t a sackable offense on its own. The more worrying sign is the pattern of defensive issues and Dyche’s characteristic frustrations.
With key player Jarrad Branthwaite injured and several other defensive issues, Dyche’s challenges are significant, but Everton seems committed to backing him for the season. Whether this support is due to genuine confidence or necessity remains unclear.
