A former England midfielder has suggested that Sunderland’s young star, Chris Rigg, might be on his way out of the club soon.
Sunderland suffered their first defeat of the 2024/25 Championship season with a 3-2 loss to Plymouth Argyle. Despite impressive performances from Romaine Mundle and other attacking players, defensive errors proved costly.
As Sunderland prepares to face Middlesbrough, the team boasts strong midfield options, including Rigg, Dan Neil, and Jobe Bellingham. However, Rigg, in particular, has been highlighted as a potential departure target by former England international Carlton Palmer.
Palmer praised Rigg’s performance this season but also pointed out that a move could be imminent. He commented to Football League World: “Sunderland’s approach has always been to develop young talent and then sell them. If a significant offer comes in, they are likely to let the player go. Rigg, at just 17, has already made a mark in the first team, and if a major club expresses interest, he’ll have to consider the move.”
Palmer added that Sunderland’s promotion to the Premier League might improve their chances of keeping Rigg, but if top European clubs like Real Madrid or Borussia Dortmund come calling, the young midfielder might still opt to leave.
Sunderland must prepare for the possibility of Rigg’s departure by planning their long-term strategy. While Rigg’s exit would be a significant loss, the club may need to either nurture new talent from the academy or explore the transfer market to ensure they have a viable replacement.
