McKennie was brought to Leeds in January 2023 on a loan-to-buy deal from Juventus and was initially seen as a significant signing. Larger Premier League clubs were interested, but he chose to join fellow Americans Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson.
Leeds had a gentleman’s agreement with Juventus to sign him permanently for a hefty £34.3 million, contingent on avoiding relegation. Unfortunately, Leeds did not stay up, and McKennie returned to Juventus after making 20 appearances.
During his time at Leeds, McKennie’s fitness was scrutinized, and he struggled to make an impact, especially with Adams injured and frequent managerial changes affecting the team. As Leeds faced relegation, he became a target for fan criticism. However, since rejoining Juventus, McKennie has thrived, providing 10 assists in 38 games last season.
Recently, he scored in Juventus’ 3-1 victory over PSV Eindhoven, marking his fifth career goal in the Champions League and his first since leaving Leeds.
Reflecting on his time at Leeds after his exit, McKennie acknowledged the disappointment felt by fans. “I think going to Leeds and having the experience I had there, I may have let some people down,” he admitted in January, expressing regret for not meeting expectations.
