Leeds United aimed to sign a new no. 10 over the summer but were unsuccessful, leaving Brenden Aaronson as the only natural player for that role, according to Daniel Farke.
On the eve of the transfer deadline, Farke indicated that Leeds would pursue a new no. 10 if the right opportunity arose, but no deals materialized, despite links to Roland Sallai.
In a recent interview, Angus Kinnear revealed that Leeds had shown interest in several Premier League players capable of playing behind the striker. He noted that James McAtee of Manchester City was a target, but Pep Guardiola opted to retain him. Fabio Carvalho was also considered, but he ultimately signed with Brentford for £27 million after Leeds missed out in January.
Kinnear also mentioned that Leeds attempted to sign Emiliano Buendia from Aston Villa. Buendia, who joined Villa for £40 million, has had a challenging year, suffering an ACL injury just before the 2023-24 season and is only now making his return to play. After a solid pre-season, he has made a few appearances this term but could have left Villa this summer, with Farke hoping for a reunion.
However, Buendia declined the move to Elland Road, and recently made his Champions League debut for Villa. Despite his progress, questions remain about whether his limited role as a fringe player will help him fully regain his form.
Considering his background and the need for a creative playmaker, it might be beneficial for Buendia to join a team like Leeds, which plays attacking football and could provide him with the regular minutes he needs to rebuild his confidence. Leeds should keep an eye on this situation.
