Sunderland has reportedly decided against pursuing a free-agent signing of Aaron Connolly. According to the Sunderland Echo, the Black Cats will not be making an approach for the Ireland international at this time.
Connolly is currently without a club after his contract with Hull City was not renewed following a season in which he made 28 Championship appearances, scoring eight goals. Injury issues limited his contributions during that campaign.
Despite Sunderland’s ongoing search for striker options, they will not be looking to sign Connolly. The club had previously explored several potential strikers over the summer but ultimately secured Wilson Isidor on loan and Ahmed Abdullahi from KAA Gent.
Even though they can still sign free agents after the transfer window closed, Sunderland is not actively pursuing Connolly. Instead, Eliezer Mayenda has stepped up as the team’s first-choice striker, having started all five league matches this season and contributing two goals and two assists.
Régis Le Bris, the head coach, has had a positive start with the team currently sitting second in the league. He emphasized the importance of shared scoring responsibilities across the squad, stating, “The striker is not the only player on the pitch who has the responsibility to score.” He believes that creating danger from multiple players—strikers, wingers, and midfielders—will enhance their scoring potential.
Given Mayenda’s strong start to the season, pursuing Connolly may not align with Sunderland’s focus on developing young talent. The club is prioritizing giving Mayenda the opportunity to continue proving himself.
